After several long days of traveling “Modern Potluck” by Kristin Donnelly appeared in my mailbox. I had planned to go to bed early to combat (or succumb to?) jet lag but this amazing book changed that plan. The first thing I love about this book is the photography and food styling…I mean, really, the pictures are GORGEOUS! Talk about #foodporn. If all I wanted were good looking recipes this book delivers 100%. But the pictures are just the beginning. I chose this book because I wanted not just options for taking to a potluck but food that I could also prep on the weekend that would stay good throughout the week for some sides, mains and yummy lunch options. Usually I add sticky note tabs to cookbooks to highlight the recipes I want to try. This book ruined my nerdy tabbing system in a good way. I usually tab the ones I want to try right away at the top outer edge, ones I want to try soon in the middle and ones I want to save for a different season or special occasion closest to the spine (and those I don’t want to try just get no tabs). Seems simple enough…but I can’t tab this book. E-V-E-R-Y tab would be a “try right away” tab. I love everything about this book, the notes on recipes and potluck tips and the introductions to the recipes that give us a peek into Donnelly’s life and personality. I want Kristin Donnelly to be my new best friend. Until that day comes I will happily eat my way through this book and wow friends and family with all of her fantastic recipes starting with Chinese Chicken Salad with Sesame-Ginger Dressing, Flank Steak Lettuce Cups with Lime-Hoisin Dressing (page 88), Slow-Roasted Lemon-Soy-Honey Pork Shoulder (page 99) and Phoebe’s Moroccan-Inspired Shepherd’s Pie (page 130).
I received a copy of this book from Blogging for Books in Exchange for an honest review.
